The tortuous passage of mortared stone angles downward so steeply the Doctor’s torchlight barely clings to the walls. Its outer mouth is a hidden seam in the judicial friezes—blindfolded figures balancing scales so worn their outlines blur into the surrounding granite, the pivot point detectable only when pressure finds a ridge previously invisible. As the two men descend, cold air exhales upward, smelling of wet wool and centuries of unlit nights; the torches spaced impossibly far apart send smoke coiling in slow spirals that catch the flicker of steel the Doctor keeps drawn. The right-hand wall glistens with condensation that briefly mirrors the false ceiling three hand-spans above, briefly framing the men’s shadows before the images melt away. Halfway down, the corridor opens inward into a low antechamber where the floor is obsidian underfoot, reflecting torch flames so faintly they appear dying embers. To either side, slitted openings hide unseen watchers, yet the air still carries no other sound than Giuliano’s sharp breathing and the scrape of their boots on worn flags.
