Sailor

The Sailor is a recurring figure of the common seaman thrust into the unfathomable. In the 19th century, he serves as a crew member aboard the brigantine Mary Celeste, where a frantic search for a stowaway leads him to confront the Daleks; terror overwhelms him, driving him to plead for mercy and leap overboard, dragging a Dalek into the sea. In later eras, he appears as a Royal Navy sailor conscripted by the Master for the Sea Devil stronghold operation, his consciousness suppressed through hypnosis until he becomes a mechanically obedient puppet, piloting vessels and repeating commands without comprehension. The final reveal of his latex mask exposes the depth of the Master's deception. Years later, still under the Master's conditioning, he is reduced to a hollow enforcer within Inter Minor's Miniscope: his hands shaped into a tool, his voice lost, his body wrapped in webbing, a motionless weapon preserved in a spacesuit that cannot salvage what remains of his self. Across these incarnations, the Sailor embodies the human being eroded by forces beyond his control—first by fear, then by manipulation, finally by the complete erasure of will.
